attic ceilings, ozone (‘It’s a life all its own’ – local saying). These two seemingly contradictory terms could not be more contrasting as one describes an excursion into the Liberty Science Center, while the other seems to suggest an ascendance of scientific knowledge. The Liberty Science Center was established in Liberty University, Philadelphia, in 1963. Known as the “alkyler Auditorium,” home to the prestigious Citadel upkeep Foundation, the Liberty Science Center took shape as the nation’s first ‘ augmented science center.’
The first phases of the center included a railroad, a warehouse and a research station. Liberty University itself was integrated into the complex in 1969. The remaining school buildings were used to house various IMAX theaters, computer workstations and research equipment.
The present day Liberty Science Center possesses over 140 interactive exhibits and programs covering a wide range of scientific subjects. Also on site is an IMAX Theater, a research library, a television studio and a variety of souvenir shops. The Liberty Science Center possesses a corporate office, shops and a restaurant, all of which are complimentary.

The Center is conveniently located in the Institute and the adjacent buildings. It is also close to Monument Park and the Botanical Garden. It is only two miles away fromGrand Island Railroad. While we didn’t visit the Science Center on our visit, upon arriving we found Monument Park nearby and walked right over there. It is a great place to while away the afternoon and is a great way of getting exercise.
In addition to the Liberty Science Center, many visitors arriving atNewark from Hoboken ship directly to Carson City in Oregon. It is not difficult to find the parking space nearest the Science Center. There are also a number of shuttle buses serving the Science Center, so it is important to and from the center in a timely manner. To return passengers will either have to wait for another shuttle bus or for a taxi ride from the southern end of the island.
There are enjoyable dining experiences available on the Island, however, due to the increased cost of food at this point in time, it is probably best to explore restaurants further from the center of the Island. The island is only about 20 minutes by boat from either end. If you arrive early in the morning, there are beach restaurants serving food ranging from coffee to meals served on the beach. During the late afternoon, you will find most of the restaurants in the ‘ship-shape’ buildings that are scattered around the island. The only real problem here is the ‘ship-shape’ buildings are young. If you’re a little hungry, grab a basket of food at the snack stand and take it with you as you will find manyacky-looking places selling fried marshmallows and sugar. Grab yourself a waffle and sit down for a bit to enjoy the candy that was dropped on your head!
Newark is a great destination for a summer staycation, or a one-day excursion from the busyness of the city. To get there, use the free shuttle bus or catch the ferry. No matter which method you choose, it’s a relatively clean, picturesque ride. Sunset, however, may be somewhat difficult.
